Director Notes –

Seasons are changing, the writing is on the wall, group motorcycling in Iowa for 2007 is quickly coming to an end.

We've had some great times together.  I hope the bad ones quietly fade away.

For Eilene and I several things have changed, the biggest is the acquisition of the lake home in May (along with my three sisters).  Our time is being spread too thin on several major pieces of our life.

We joined this group late in the season of 2004.  At that point we completely abandoned our camping and many family activities.  Until then, we would have an annual family gathering at our home inviting close and distant relatives.  Earlier this year we pulled the RV out of the moth balls, primarily to sleep in at the lake.  We actually camped in it in Winterset last month.  Those activities have rekindled that desire.

We continue to have a passion for motorcycling but, we really don't have the time to continue in the capacity that we are currently at.

In the near future we will be holding an election to replace Eilene and myself as the chapter director.  We want to simply return to being members.

Thank you for the support we have been given.  I learned that I can't make everyone happy; I did the best I could.

I was elected at a low point for chapter-I, together we turned things around.  Chapter-I is going strong, things are looking up.

As we enter the planning phase of 2008 the new officers need to be in place.

Thank you

Dennis and Eilene Baber

Rick Bradford and his move to Tennessee

Thanks for the great times with the chapter and I hope Chapter I and my new chapter will continue to keep in touch. My wife and I are looking forward to Chapter I visiting us in Tennessee. She likes to cook and is a great southern cook, if I do say myself.  Looking forward to more great times on the motorcycle with all of GWTA.  Thanks for the memories!!
Destination Funship!!  Darn now I have to come up with a new catch word...but that's OK!! All suggestions are welcome

MEET A MEMBER
Ray and Judy Busch
This is Ray and Judy Busch. We ride a 1998 Candy Apple Red Goldwing. Ray has been riding motorcycles since he was about 15 years old. When Ray was 19 he met me and I have been riding behind him ever since. We took a trip to Florida on a motorcycle in January of 1963, (we were riding a new 305 Honda Dream.) It was a little cold but a lot of fun. We have taken quit a few motorcycle trips over the years. We have been married for 45 years and farm for a living. Our farm is close to the town of Ogden. We both grew up on a farm and think it is a good place to raise a family. We have been blessed with four daughters. Between the four girls we have 10 grandchildren, (5 boys and 5 girls). We think we are very lucky that all of our children and grandchildren live within 14 miles of the farm, so we get to enjoy our family. Ray has had quit a few other hobbies over the years. Among them are Race cars and ultra light airplanes. I like to raise flowers and plant a garden in the summer time. I like to sew in the wintertime. But my favorite hobby is baking for the grandkids. Ray and I look forward to seeing all of you at motorcycle functions.
Well, we talked briefly about the “Lucky Seven Drawing” and now we have a challenge from Nebraska.

Hello to all,
Nebraska would like to issue a challenge to all of the other Region C States. I will donate to the state that sells the most Seven Chance tickets between now and Gold Rush XXI, four Nebraska corn fed steaks. In addition to this if the high ticket sales goes to anyone other than NE. I will shave my head at Gold Rush. I don't think any of the other states in Region C has what it takes to up stage Nebraska......Illinioze, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, what do you have to offer to make this interesting? I would warn you not to offer to much as the rest of you don't have a chance.
Rick and Kandie Hinrichs
Nebraska GWTA State Directors

Also, more information regarding the Region training that will happen in West Des Moines on November 10.  Keep the date in mind and Dennis B will be talking about it at the meeting on Sunday, October 21, 2007.  This can help our chapter by learning some good information and getting our chapter registration for the next year paid for.
G.W.T.A.  REGION  "C"
GOLD RUSH XXI – July 14 – 17, 2008

If you are considering going to Gold Rush at all, you need to get your registration in now.  Between now and December 31, 2007 you can get 2 for 1 member registration for Gold Rush.  If something does happen you can get a refund until July 1, 2008, which means $40 for 2 people.  It is going to be held in Billings, Montana and should be a gorgeous place, with lots of great roads to ride and enjoy.  Information regarding Gold Rush is on the GWTA Website at www.gwta.org.  There will be a registration form attached to this newsletter.

FREE MEMBERSHIPS

GWTA is really into giving things away this year. Were you a member in good standing in July of 2007?  Well, you have 1 free membership to give away and help our Chapter grow and get new ideas coming in.  You may give one membership to anyone interested.  They have a motorcycle and they have NEVER been a GWTA member before.  The receiving person needs to fill out a membership application and put your name and member number on it, for the amount mark it FREE, and mail it so the GWTA office receives it by November 30, 2007.  This is for EVERYONE!  Think about some of your friends and remember, a huge benefit is the $1,000,000 umbrella policy every member has in case of an accident that is their fault and will help AFTER your own personal insurance is paid.  The free memberships will get the monthly Touring News and a Membership card.  Since the memberships are free, there will be no patches or pins, however, those can be purchased.
ARMS FOR AARON
We did a fundraiser for Aaron in June and through time due to this event over $5000 was deposited to the account at Wellsfargo.  Aaron was in the news this summer and has received his set of arms.  He is a wonderful little guy with spirit that is amazing.  This picture isn’t the greatest, but he does have arms.  They are controlled by buttons that his original hands push to control.  Thank you to all that helped and supported a great event.

FROM OUR SAFETY GUYS   Thank you Rich Konen for this!

As a contributing writer, I have an open season on my safety articles... If it is not acceptable by the group it is targeted for, that is ok also...     It is a little early to write a, put your bike up for the winter article, especially as there is at least another month of riding season left...       Now is the time to start your list for next year...    What was your funnest ride, what made it really stand out?    Was it a solo ride, or with friends?  What made it memorable over others? Was it a breakdown, or really nasty weather, or maybe just a bad experience at a motel or campground?  Adverse trips are the ones you usually remember for years afterwards...   If you’re like me, now is the time to go over your camping gear and your motorcycle...  Personally, with two vintage motorcycles in need of restoration ,plus my work bike way overdue for a major overhaul,[ its setting at 179,000 miles ] ,I have most of my list figured out for the winter..

How about your riding gear, if you had an unscheduled dismount, would it protect you, or is it lacking? Speaking of unscheduled dismounts, is the suspension on your motorcycle getting worn out?   Have you upgrade your rear shocks and at the very least changed oil in your front forks?   How about those tires you're trying to finish out the year on, a late season accident is no fun , plus if you have a nice day in the middle of winter you will take it out on those [ racing slicks ] in adverse conditions, and with sand on the road..  Now is the time, while you still have the weather and the option of trying them out to make those upgrades to your motorcycle and riding gear...

As I write this, the third weekend in October, this will be my last motorcycle class of the year at DMACC so it is time to ride, fall is a joy to ride in since most of the bugs are gone and its easier to dress in layers and don your electric clothing than strip down when it is beastly hot...Which brings me up to my next point, As the pavement cools your tires will not stick as easily and they will tend to not warm up so plan to corner a little slower...Keeping in mind mud and dirt brought out of fields and onto the road by combines and tractors ..    Think about the lack of traction cornering or braking on leaves, wet or dry, lying on the road...  Ideally everyone would change out their touring tires to a stickier tire in cool weather, but I also realize most people do not have extra wheels for there motorcycle.
Keep the shiny side up and I’ll see you out on the road...

Chapter I Travels

Colorama – Several families attended Colorama in Forsyth, Missouri October 12-14.  Several made the trip last a little longer, by going down early.  Baber’s, Irvin’s, Guenther’s, Thomason’s, Cinnamon’s and Jim Castelblanco were all there.  A great time was had by all even with some mishaps.  Dennis B has something wrong, his cylinder keeps dropping when he gets on the throttle, Glenn hit a brick or something in the road and really bent up that front wheel (Steve Short from Missouri helped him out by loaning him a wheel and Wiliferd by changing it and Don T with the use of truck and trailer).  Dennis I has an oil leak that just doesn’t want to be found, his speedo decided it didn’t want to show the speed and ended up with a rear flat – a slit in the tire.  Thanks to Glenn, they got the plug kit and they made it home.  There was a 2 bike mishap on one of the rides, which gave reason for Baber’s to trailer their bike down, they were able to go help by picking up a motorcycle.  Dennis I got a prize for having the most bike problems.  Thomason’s pulled sweep on the way home to make sure there were no spare parts on the highway from the Irvin or Guenther motorcycle.  This was a great rally as always.  Sadness came Saturday night at dinner when it was announced that Jack and Denise have sold Shoals Bend RV Park.  We have been assured the new owners will greet us the same, and that now Jack and Denise will be joining us and camping and riding with us.  On Friday afternoon some of us took part in a safety seminar.  This was good information and we appreciated having the opportunity to do this.
